From Trash to Treasure: How Recycling Aluminum Cans Saves Energy and Creates a Better Future
Part 1 of our recycling Aluminum blog series, Let's Get Started, explored the incredible benefits of recycling aluminum. We highlighted its infinite recyclability, the massive energy savings it generates, and even the economic incentives it offers. But how do we translate this knowledge into action?
At ZrO Waste Group, our mission is simple: eliminate waste. It might sound idealistic, but consider aluminum. Abundant on Earth, this infinitely recyclable metal is a prime example. Aluminum cans are a common sight, and recycling them offers a double win. Not only can they be reborn endlessly, but the process also saves 92-95% of the energy needed to create new ones. Tossing used cans in landfills is a colossal waste of resources and a practice we can quickly eliminate.
For years, the US alone has buried millions of tons of aluminum. It's time for a change, and the first step begins with a shift in perspective. We at ZrO Waste believe waste is entirely unnecessary.
Just like Bill Coors, the founder of Coors Light, we strive for constant improvement. In 1959, he developed the recyclable aluminum can that we now use for all our favorite beverages. Not only did he create a better, colder product, but he also created a better option than the non-recyclable steel cans they used previously. This innovation sparked the monumental "Cash for Cans" program, immensely aiding aluminum recycling efforts. Building on past successes motivates us at ZrO Waste to develop and spread innovative, environmentally sustainable ideas.
For us, though, it is vital that we encourage our fellow Americans to join the mission. Our culture of abundance has undoubtedly contributed to a wasteful mindset in the US, and it should be reversed. The next step is education. By understanding the impact of recycling, individuals can become powerful contributors. Additionally, improving the recycling infrastructure for aluminum cans is crucial.
Americans must start viewing waste like empty aluminum cans as more than trash. The old saying "out of sight, out of mind" fosters a shortsighted perspective that burdens others. Exporting our waste has long-term repercussions for the global environment, especially when importing countries lack proper waste management systems. Additionally, new federal restrictions are affecting the waste management and environmental management market, such as the EPA setting standards for PFAS in bottled water. These increased policies highlight the importance of bolstering recycling efforts and replacing “out of sight, out of mind” with “recycle, don't let your future become trash.”
This change doesn't happen overnight, but with growing commitment, we can move towards a future where good practices can improve our attitudes and actions; it is people who hold the key to success. History shows that when individuals understand the value of their contribution, significant change can be achieved. In this case, the reward is immense – saving vast amounts of energy currently wasted on discarded aluminum.
Stay tuned for Part 3, where we'll delve deeper into the exciting world of aluminum innovation and what ZrO Waste is creating to develop a greener tomorrow!
